Food and agriculture must too.\u201c to mark the World Food Day. The conference was organized under the high auspices of Kolinda Grabar Kitarovi\u0107, the President of the Republic of Croatia, and under the patronage of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection of the Republic of Croatia.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">An excellent turnout and diversity of participants attested the importance of this year&#8217;s theme of the conference. \u201eThis international conference brought together about 200 representatives of the national and international scientific community, competent authorities, industry and consumers \u0301 organizations, united in common desire to approach issue of the impact of climate change on agriculture and food security systematically, timely and with gravity which it really requires\u201c, said in her opening word Director of Croatian Food Agency, Andrea Gross Bo\u0161kovi\u0107.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3469 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/svjetski-dan-hrane-2016-konferencija-620x414.jpg\" alt=\"svjetski-dan-hrane-2016-konferencija\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/svjetski-dan-hrane-2016-konferencija-620x414.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/svjetski-dan-hrane-2016-konferencija-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/svjetski-dan-hrane-2016-konferencija-940x627.jpg 940w, https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/svjetski-dan-hrane-2016-konferencija-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/svjetski-dan-hrane-2016-konferencija.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">In the opening part the audience was welcomed and addressed also by Denis Ambru\u0161, Deputy Major of City of Osijek, \u017deljko Kralji\u010dak, Deputy County Prefect of the Osijek-Baranja County, Reuben Sessa, representative of the FAO, Ru\u017eica Pali\u0107 Kramari\u0107, Assistant Minister, Ministry of Health, and Tomislav Ki\u0161, Assistant Minister, Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Croatia.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">In the transmitted video message, FAO Director-General said that the agricultural sector can play a key role in solving the issue of negative impacts of climate change, and concluded following: \u201eWorld Food Day 2016 is an excellent opportunity to determine how best to respond to these challenges.\u201c<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3465 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/wfd-2016-dr-sc-reuben-sessa-fao-620x407.jpg\" alt=\"wfd-2016-dr-sc-reuben-sessa-fao\" width=\"620\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/wfd-2016-dr-sc-reuben-sessa-fao-620x407.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/wfd-2016-dr-sc-reuben-sessa-fao-768x505.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/wfd-2016-dr-sc-reuben-sessa-fao-940x618.jpg 940w, https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/wfd-2016-dr-sc-reuben-sessa-fao-600x394.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/wfd-2016-dr-sc-reuben-sessa-fao.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The first part of the plenary sessions was opened with a presentation entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hah.hr\/pdf\/wfd-2016\/Reuben-Sessa.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u201eClimate smart agriculture \u2013 Sustainable development in a changing climate\u201c<\/a>. This type of agriculture, supported by FAO itself, was presented by D.Sc. Danijel Jug delivered the presentation <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hah.hr\/pdf\/wfd-2016\/Danijel-Jug.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">\u201eAdapting agriculture to climate change \u2013 What should be done?\u201c.<\/a> <\/u>He once again pointed out that to deal with climate change, we firstly must change our attitude towards agricultural production, in order to reduce the negative impacts of agriculture on the environment, and that for successful adaptation to climate change is necessary to act together.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3462 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/wfd-2016-andrea-gross-boskovic-hah-620x414.jpg\" alt=\"wfd-2016-andrea-gross-boskovic-hah\" width=\"620\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/wfd-2016-andrea-gross-boskovic-hah-620x414.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/wfd-2016-andrea-gross-boskovic-hah-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/wfd-2016-andrea-gross-boskovic-hah-940x627.jpg 940w, https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/wfd-2016-andrea-gross-boskovic-hah-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.hah.hr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/wfd-2016-andrea-gross-boskovic-hah.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">At the end of the second part of the plenary sessions, Andrea Gross Bo\u0161kovi\u0107, Director of Croatian Food Agency, informed the audience of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hah.hr\/pdf\/wfd-2016\/Andrea-Gross-Boskovic.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">edible insects as food and feed for nutrition.<\/a> Since the trend of a lack of food in the world is growing inexorably, the possibility of using edible insects as a new source of food for humans and animals must be considered.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">The second part of the conference was closed by discussion and questions of participants, which were moderated by Danijela Stra\u017eanac from the Croatian Food Agency.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">In the concluding remarks, it was pointed out that the unpredictable weather conditions and increased outbreaks of various food-borne diseases, caused by mycotoxins and other contaminants, adversely affect agricultural productivity and disrupt global availability of safe food. Since the impact of climate change on agriculture and food safety represents a multidisciplinary problem, joint actions of the whole society are necessary as soon as possible.<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">At the end of the conference, Director of the Croatian Food Agency concluded that \u201eWhen dealing with climate change issues, the cooperation of all stakeholders of society is needed to ensure the economic progress at the national and international level as well. More than ever, cooperation of science and economy is needed, in order to ensure the long-term well-being of the whole society.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\">As an introduction to the conference, on October 13th, 2016, in Urania Cinema in Osijek, was held free screening of the documentary \u201c10 Billion &#8211; what&#8217;s on your plate?\u201d, in front of around 150 spectators. This documentary speaks boldly and openly about the increasing problem of lack of food in the world, and bring into question what kind of food will we actually eat when the world population grows to ten billion people.<\/p>\n<p><!--\n\n\n<h4 style=\"color: #7f7e7e;\" align=\"center\">13th and 14th October 2016<\/h4>\n\n\n\n\n<h4 style=\"color: #7f7e7e;\" align=\"center\">Osijek, Croatia<\/h4>\n\n\n&nbsp;\n\n\n<p align=\"justify\">Croatian Food Agency, together with FAO, under the high auspices of the <strong>President of the Republic of Croatia, Kolinda Grabar Kitarovi\u0107<\/strong>, as well as the patronage of <strong>Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection<\/strong> of the Republic of Croatia, is planning to celebrate the World Food Day in Croatia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p align=\"justify\">The marking of World Food Day will be held in the scope of the International Conference <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hah.hr\/en\/wfd2016\/program\/\">\u201cClimate is changing. Food and agriculture must too.\u201d<\/a><\/strong>, which will take place at Faculty of Agriculture in Osijek, on <strong>Friday, October 14<\/strong><strong>th, 2016, starting at 10 am.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p align=\"justify\">Prior to the conference, on <strong>Thursday, October 13<\/strong><strong>th<\/strong><strong>, 2016, at 18 pm<\/strong>, in Urania Cinema in Osijek, will be held <strong>free<\/strong> screening of the documentary <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hah.hr\/en\/wfd2016\/10-milijardi\/\">\u201c10 Billion - what's on your plate?\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Background:<\/strong> One of the biggest issues related to climate change is food security. The global population is growing steadily and is expected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050. To meet such a heavy demand, agriculture and food systems will need to adapt to the adverse effects of climat<span lang=\"en-AU\">e change and become more resilient, productive and sustainable. Growing food in a sustainable way means adopting practices that produce more with less in the same area of land and use natural resources wisely. It also means reducing fo<\/span><span lang=\"en-AU\">od losses before the final product or retail stage through a number of initiatives including better harvesting, storage, packing, transport, infrastructure, market mechanisms, as well as institutional and legal frameworks. Having that in mind, FAO is calling on countries to address food and agriculture in their climate action plans and invest more in rural development.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p align=\"justify\"><strong>Audience: <\/strong>The event will be an opportunity for representatives of food authorities, farmers, the industry, consumer's organizations, universities, research institutes and other stakeholder groups, from Croatia and the region, to meet, exchange views, and discuss models of possible future collaboration related to this common issue, where joint initiative is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p align=\"justify\">The conference will be held in both, Croatian and English, and interpretation will be provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n<p align=\"justify\">Participation at the conference is <strong>free of charge<\/strong>.
